Background

The Bahamas Humane Society (BHS) - a no kill shelter - is currently overwhelmed with
stray and unwanted dogs which has resulted in a capacity crisis. Happily, a number of
shelters in Ontario, Canada have stepped up to help by taking in Potcakes and finding
them loving adoptive homes.
In December 2018, our first Project Potcake Airlift successfully transported 28 Potcake
puppies from the BHS and its affiliate, Potcake Puppy Palace (PPP), to Canada. The
puppies were taken in by four shelter organizations – the Humane Society of Durham
Region (HSDR), Northumberland Humane Society, Fort Erie SPCA and the
Peterborough Humane Society.
All of the participating Canadian shelters were deluged with adoption applications and
the puppies promptly found loving, permanent homes. These shelters, led by HSDR, are
now ready and willing to take in more Potcakes to meet enthusiastic adoptive demands.

Please note donated funds will convert to Canadian dollars. All donors will automatically
receive a charitable tax receipt from the HSDR. These funds will primarily support transport

About Potcakes

Potcake is the name given to the stray dogs of the Bahamas and the Turks & Caicos
Islands. It came about because the locals fed the caked remains of the cooking pot to
the dogs. As generations have passed, Potcakes have evolved into a breed which is
extremely smart, loyal and loving.
